“Property was well looked after, lovely gardens and well maintained.”

One negative was that toilet downstairs.so visiting the loo during the night was via awkward staircase. Access via narrow lanes, parking quite difficult, local pub more like 2 miles away and again narrow lanes, certainly not safe walking(it was closed during the week of our visit).

We're very pleased to hear you enjoyed the stay. Our wonderful garden team, led by Amanda, and Cheryl our great housekeeper, do everything they can to make a stay at Appletree memorable. Appletree is a charming, 18th century cottage listed by Historic England as part of a typical Devon thatched terrace of former labourer's cottages. As with many old and characterful cottages, internal arrangements can be a challenge. For that reason, we have tried to make it clear in the details that the bathroom and WC are on the ground floor and that the cottage is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Looking ahead, we have, after two years of trying, finally got planning permission from the Dartmoor National Park to install a WC on the top floor and will be carrying out the building works later next year. We also appreciate that Devon lanes are narrow - especially when the vegetation on the banks grows quickly as it does in the summer months. Most traffic that passes by is very local so the drivers know the roads well. We're always reassured to know that the recycling lorries manage the lanes but the ability to reverse is a useful skill in Devon that the locals have clearly mastered! We're sorry to hear that the pub (presumably the Carpenters Arms in Ilsington) was shut during your stay. The walk there from the cottage is very pretty - a half mile down the lane, then up via the footpath through the woods into Ilsington village. That route is just over a mile and takes about 25 minutes. In terms of walking along the lanes, we keep hi-viz jackets for guests in the lean to and recommend wearing them at night if walking along the lanes. David and Hilary Property Owner

About the location

BOVEY TRACEY

Newton Abbott 6.5 miles; Teigmouth 10 miles; Exeter 15 miles

Nestled in the valley of the River Bovey is this stunning little town known as "The Gateway to the Moor". Bovey Tracey got its name from the meandering river that flows through it, with 'Tracey' representing the family that were the lords of the manor after the Norman Conquest. It has a great history with heavy involvement in the English Civil War which resulted in the name of the town's pub "The Cromwell Arms" which serves real ale and good food. The history of the town can be discovered in the Heritage Centre, with the Dartmoor National Park Authority also nearby. Bovey Tracey offers a selection of shops and cafés along with the stunning Mill Marsh Park and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery which offers guided tours. The town comes just outside of the Dartmoor National Park which provides seemingly endless walking and cycling paths along with incredible scenery. The market town of Newton Abbot sits nearby, offering a fantastic day out with charming buildings and a good range of amenities. The beautiful city of Exeter is also within driving distance, and if a day at the seaside is what you're after then take a trip to Teignmouth.

Note: BBQs are not permitted due to the thatched roof. Short breaks are not available.
Due to the changes in level in the terraced garden, this cottage is not suitable for young children or those with limited mobility.
Parking at the rear of the property is accessed via a narrow lane.
Reduced rent for smaller groups up to 2 people - available all year.
Note: For any holiday starting between 16th September and 27th May, a heating supplement of £35.00 will be added to the cost of your holiday.
