“We absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful, homely, cosy, traditional Cornish cottage with scented roses and lovely tubs of flowers all around the outside of the house.”

Located in a small, peaceful hamlet, down a quiet road, with lovely views across open fields, naturally a car is essential to get about. The local coastline is absolutely stunning and well looked after with life guards on every beach, no litter in sight and the sea is clean and crystal clear! The nearest shop for groceries, very good chippy and great local pub the Cornish Arms are all in St Merryn only 3 miles away. Friendly locals and everyone made us feel so welcome. Perfect for anyone seeking a quiet, remote hideaway on the North Cornish coast. There is a shop, garage and fish and chip shop in St Merryn and a Tesco superstore near Padstow, if you need it. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. As it was the end of October, we particularly appreciated the woodburner and the hot shower! Good sized kitchen with electric cooker; no dishwasher but that didn't bother us. Beautiful old stone cottage with lots of original features; easy parking outside. The owner is friendly and helpful. We did lots of coastal path walking in the local area and had a great time.

“Uphill Cottage is a very welcoming and cosy cottage set near a very beautiful part of the Cornish coastline.”

The sitting room is very comfortable and has a large fireplace with a woodburning stove for extra warmth if needed. During the day, the conservatory made a great place to read and relax. The owner went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. Parking at the cottage was very easy. Penrose, where the cottage is situated, is a friendly hamlet and an ideal base for exploring the area and beyond and it's an easy walk from there to the lovely beach at Porthcothan. All the local bays and beaches were within a short drive and we particularly loved Constantine Bay. For shopping, nearby Padstow has a wide range of shops and a large Tesco for stocking up on essentials.

“A Perfect Countryside Escape – 10/10 The cottage, the Hamlet, and the location were absolutely spot on for us – a solid 10/10.”

Tucked away in a peaceful little corner of the countryside, it was everything we hoped for and more. Tranquil, charming, and just the right amount of remote. The walk to the beach was a real highlight – around 30 minutes of gentle strolling through a beautiful valley, following the river at times and accompanied by birdsong and some lovely plant life. We half expected a deer to wander out and nod at us approvingly. Malcolm, our host, was there to greet us with a warm welcome, which was much appreciated after the drive. He struck the perfect balance of being helpful and friendly without ever being intrusive. The silence and fresh air were a real treat – it felt like a proper reset from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If only we could’ve captured it all in a jar and taken it home with us – sadly, that sort of magic doesn’t travel well. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you, Malcolm – until next time!

“Uphill Cottage is in a very peaceful place.”

The conservatory at the front sees the sun from dawn to dusk. As it was a sunny week, that’s where we were, or out on the patch of lawn. There’s a large comfortable sitting room and a small dining room which would be cosy places to be on colder darker days. The three bedrooms, kitchen, and bathroom are all a good size. An easy walk down a valley footpath to the nearest beach. Lovely place to stay.

We really enjoyed our stay and we especially liked the conservatory. Penrose is super quiet and just the right place to relax. The many beaches nearby were just fantastic. The proximity to Porthcothan Bay is lovely. We liked Constantine Bay the most. You can also start some lovely walks from Uphill Cottage or the beaches. If you are looking for a quiet holiday with a beach and walks along the coast, this is the place for you.

Breakfast in the conservatory was a particular highlight each day. M who looks after it is helpful yet not intrusive. There are many beaches within 15 minutes drive and St Merryn has all you need (2 pubs, chippy, Chinese, petrol station...) We had a great 2 weeks in spite of not the best weather, Only thing it lacks is a dishwasher- but that was not a big deal!!

The conservatory was a bonus & a lovely place to relax. The hamlet was very peaceful with lovely views from the cottage. It was very quiet but only a short drive to St Merryn for shops, pubs and restaurants. A good base to visit other areas of North Cornwall. Malcolm, the owner, was very friendly and helpful, but certainly not intrusive. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable week.

Excellent location for visiting the surrounding amazing beaches and great dog walks. The cottage was clean and well looked after. A lovely bonus is the warm south facing conservatory to enjoy the country side views and a drink or two. A hidden gem. A great peaceful place for watching the night skies, local bats and wildlife.

“The cottage is set in a very quiet little hamlet, off the beaten track, perfect for a relaxing, de-stressing break.”

We booked the cottage as a base to visit family on both the north and south coasts so it was perfect for us. An easy commute to Padstow and Wadebridge. The nearest town is St Merryn which has an excellent pub - Farmers Arms and an excellent Chinese takeaway. It is also very close to Portcothan beach which is a small inlet with a lovely beach and dog friendly. The only disappointment was that the week went by so fast.

Set in a very pretty and peaceful hamlet it's in good reach of many destinations like Padstow, Wadebridge, Newquay etc. The last day we had a lovely walk on the footpath to the gorgeous beach at Porthcothan or you can drive there in 10 minutes. Wished we could have stayed longer as ran out of time to do all that we wanted to and it was such a lovely place to chill out. (If you'd prefer to wake up to the sound of constant noise rather than the birds chirping then this is probably not the place for you.)

Very peaceful location and close to St Merryn for eating out. Cottage has everything you need and very cosy. There are lots of beaches close by and for a longer drive Kynance Cove is stunning. We met Malcolm the owner and who was very helpful with ideas for eating out and places to visit. Only extra’s needed would be a sharp knife and a first supply of logs etc for fire as we had a couple of very wet days and would have been nice to get the wood burner going. Malcolm kindly gave us some tomato plants and these are now planted. Would recommend.

My family and I had a great week here, and it was the perfect base for exploring the glorious beaches between Padstow and Newquay. The closest, Porthcothan Bay, is a real gem. The cottage is also well placed for walking, with the South West Coast Path nearby and good inland trails too.

“Uphill was exactly what we were after for our week away.”

Found in a tiny hamlet, yet only 5-10 mins by car to lovely Mawgan Porth, the 250 yr old cottage has so much character and has a lovely feel to it. There is no phone signal but the cottage has good WiFi . Malcom was extremely welcoming and very knowledgeable about the area. The 30-40min walk down to Porthcothan through fields & woodland was a favourite with the dog and the small shop at the end provide great coffee & pastries! Recommend a visit for lunch or dinner at Catch in Mawgan Porth though you do need to book! My 13yr old daughter asked if we can come back…maybe in the winter…which is a testament to what a great time we had.

The cottage was very comfortable and was well equipped. Malcolm the owner was a great host and was available if we had any questions and he gave us very useful tips for our stay. Penrose was a lovely peaceful Hamlet perfect place to relax. The local beach Porthcothan was lovely and if you enjoy walks then you can walk to it, it took us an hour but one of our children was particularly slow. we also enjoyed visiting Constantine and Treyarnon bays. Lovely choice of places to eat in St Merryn, fish and chips and The Farmers Arms both delicious. We wish we had been able to stay longer.

“We had a truly lovely week here, helped by extraordinarily good weather!”

Malcolm was very helpful and welcoming, and is on hand nearby without being at all intrusive. The cottage is delightful: three bedrooms, small sunny front garden with a picnic table and a comfortable conservatory where we spent most of the time when we were in. The rooms are all decent size and the kitchen and bathroom both fine (although the knives could have been sharper and we couldn’t find a peeler). There isn’t a dishwasher, but no problem there. Penrose is a tiny hamlet: charming but without amenities. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and we saw a peregrine falcon, bats and muntjacs among others. The footpaths aren’t brilliantly maintained so expect some slightly challenging walks. It’s a mile from the coast but not really walkable, but it’s a very short drive to a number of fabulous beaches. Portcothan is the nearest and least busy, being fairly small, and probably our favourite. The closest pubs, restaurants and shops are in St Merryn, 3 miles away. The Farmers Arms does a decent carvery and we recommend the Ivy House for a more upmarket meal. Padstow is the closest town and very busy - the boat trip made it worthwhile. Newquay is a few miles further in the other direction: a bit more tacky but fun and vibrant. But it’s the spectacular coastline in between that is the real draw, especially Bedruthan (although sadly the Steps and beach are currently closed due to rock falls). We expected to explore more of Cornwall during the week, but didn’t venture far in the end because there is so much to enjoy within a small radius. We did go to the Eden Project, which is only half an hour away. All in all excellent value, and well worth the six hour drive from Sussex! We will definitely consider returning at some point.

Cottage has charm and 'old cottage' character. Garden/outdoor space is small, but lovely countryside views, and enclosed so safe for dogs. There's a great 30-40 minute walk through meadows and woodland to Porthcothan beach.

The front conservatory is so nice to sit and eat in. The cottage is well located for the seven excellent local beaches, all within a 10 to 15 minute drive away. The beaches all have good car parks and toilet facilities but bring cash for the pay machines. Malcolm dropped by occasionally offering advice on beaches/pubs etc and also deck chairs and bikes which was greatly appreciated. Would definitely recommend.

“Two of us, and our dog, enjoyed a week at Uphill Cottage.”

It was an ideal base to walk between Padstow and Hayle on the South West Coast Path. The cottage is very homely and has a real “lived-in” feel. There’s no mobile ‘phone reception, but the WiFi works well. Malcom, the owner, lives close by and was delightful. There’s only one bathroom and toilet, so beware long soaks in the bath! It’s in a very peaceful hamlet, but there are no facilities such as a shop, pub or play park; you'll need your car to get about. We’d gladly rebook Uphill Cottage.

With a horse at the end of the road and the cottages small garden perfect for watching birds from the conservatory. Penrose is a very quiet and peaceful location, half way between Newquay and Padstow with the beautiful beaches of Mawgan Porth, Constantine Bay, Harlyn Bay and Treyarnon Bay close by. We go to Cornwall once or twice most years, and try different cottages. Would definitely come back!

The cottage was warm and cosy withe the woodburner lit on the cooler nights. The location is ideal close to Padstow but in a very quiet hamlet. The beach is close by and for the adventurous it's an interesting walk we found an ancient bridge over the stream that was very pretty and when you get back you can recoup with a glass of wine in the conservatory. All in all a great place to stay.

“Uphill Cottage is in a pretty hamlet called Penrose.”

It is very quiet and perfect to return to after a busy day on one of the nearby beaches. Constantine Bay is spectacular but parking was difficult there. We liked Porthcothan Bay as it isn’t too big or commercialised but the facilities are good, such as a lovely little bakery for ice creams, coffee, tea, cakes, Cornish pasties… We hired body boards there and they weren’t as expensive as at other bigger beaches. There are lovely coastal paths affording fabulous views of the magnificent rocky cliffs, sandy bays and sunsets. We even saw dolphins one evening, while watching the sun go down. Didn’t want to come home.

We highly recommend this property and the area was perfect. Everything was exactly how we wanted it to be. Being a good distance to Porthcothan beach was fantastic. Not to mention how beautiful the flowers were surrounding the outside of the property and how friendly the neighbours were. We felt welcomed and right at home. After returning from a busy area, it was lovely returning to the peace and quiet of Uphill Cottage. We highly recommend.

“We had a very pleasant stay at Uphill Cottage.”

The cottage is well equipped including a washing machine and dryer. I found the beds very comfortable which is probably a first for me away from home. The location is quiet and the views from the cottage conservatory quite spectacular, very welcome after a visit to crowded Padstow we could return to the cottage and relax in the peace and quiet. The cottage is well placed to visit many of the lovely sandy beaches and the nearest one Porthcothan is about a 15 min drive away maybe a bit longer if your nervous on the narrow lanes! It’s also dog friendly. We found the storage heaters a problem in that we wanted heat in the evening and of course they had gone cold by then so we would say a more modern form of heat the guests can control. There is a log fire but being over a certain age we had no intention of coming on holiday and cleaning that out every morning we remember what that used to entail when we had coal fires! All in all we would be happy to holiday at Uphill again and would recommend to our friends.

The nearby farm and it`s daily workings were a joy to watch and a chat with the farmer was fun and informative. Our dog also had plenty to do and see on the local walks! We found sitting in the conservatory and resting after a long walk most relaxing and enjoyable. Suggestions: don`t change anything it is near perfect! Thank you Malcolm (owner) for ensuring everything was in good order and that we had all we needed. Will we return? - certainly, and at the next opportunity to `get away` for a break.

Its a beautiful cottage, spotlessly clean and had everything we needed - a real home away from home. The village (hamlet really) is a really lovely location, quiet and peaceful with a beautiful walk, about a mile, down to the nearest beach, through fields and alongside a small river. We'd not explored this part of Cornwall before, but it has some incredible beaches and fantastic coastal walks, plus the Camel Trail is also not far. We would recommend to anyone, and would love to go back!

Such a gorgeous homely cottage with everything we needed and more. Truly a home from home so cosy with the lovely fire on when we had a couple of dull bad weather days but was lovely to be tucked up all cosy. Malcolm was so welcoming and so helpful with all his local knowledge and was so kind to bring us a lovely bottle of wine and homegrown tomatoes. Such a beautiful village and lovely walks right from the cottage through woods and streams to the local beach. The people in the village were so friendly and always said good morning and hello even the lovely collie dog from the farm would come and say hello.. we will definitely be back

It was well equipped with wifi, laundry facilities and cooking utensils etc. The cottage felt homely and was very comfortable. The beds were all very comfortable to sleep in. Sitting in the conservatory in the warm evening sun was a bonus too. We were 4 adults and certainly did not feel at all cramped in the cottage.

We found the cottage to be everything we needed and more.. from comfortable beds to a kitchen equipped with everything we needed, we ate in most nights enjoying family meals at the dining room table and very much enjoyed the log burner of a evening a great touch for a cosy night in with a glass of wine! We have stayed in many locations across Cornwall and Found this cottage to be the best location for a family holiday to explore the beautiful beaches,countryside and The bustling Harbour town of Padstow to enjoy the delicious pasties and cakes.. a great spot for crabbing too. Overall the whole family thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be returning again.

“Uphill cottage was a joy to stay in very clean and cosy loved the quirkinesses and very peaceful with only the sound of chickens and horses strolling by our two doggies milo and Maddie loved it with the beach 5 mins drive away we were there most mornings the village of st merry n only down the road had two very nice pubs farmers do a great car very and the Cornish arms fab evening meals all dog friendly Malcolm the owner helped with all our needs the wood burner was a hit on those chilly evenings thanks again for a lovely week we will return Simon.”

“Uphill cottage is a true Cornish Gem!”

It is an amazing cottage with everything you need for a holiday. Beds were comfy and the lounge was great to sit as a family and watch films in the evenings. The dogs had a great time too, with loads of local walks through woods and streams and onto Porthcothan beach. Malcom was helpful and full of local knowledge, which was really helpful as we didn't know the area at all. The cottage is close to great surfing beaches and cliff top walks as well as the Camel trail close by. We will be back again, and hopefully for much longer! Highly recommended.

“Lovely old cottage in a peaceful little village just a couple of miles from the coast.”

An excellent base to tour the area with Newquay, Padstow and Wadebridge just a short drive away. We visited a different beach most days, including Porthcothan, Treyarnon, Constantine, Mawgan Porth, and Harlyn. Thankfully we were blessed with good weather. Our host was very attentive and helpful suggesting places to eat and visit.

From the moment we arrived we felt at home, Malcolm popped across to greet us and make sure we had everything we needed, which we did. Penrose is so close to beautiful beaches and countryside and only a few minutes by car from Padstow. The cottage has a very safe little garden for a dog, our little dog enjoyed his week as much as his humans. We would recommend Uphill Cottage to anyone who needs to get away and chill out, but also only minutes away from decent pubs and restaurants. We would most definitely return.

“Uphill cottage is in a pretty friendly village.”

The cottage has a lovely conservory which was tranquil with views .and not having been well, this was a great place to relax ,watch the birds and the gentle movements of country village life. The cottage was equipped with everything needed, with lovely pictures and ornaments around making it very homely. All the furnishings were very comfortable,I slept so well due to such a comfy bed.The log burning fire was wonderful on our first nights whilst the weather was cooler. We had both extremes as the weather got to the 25s. How lucky were we. I cannot fault or could have wished for anything more from uphill. Malcolm our host was fantastic with a gift of wine and flowers to welcome us.He was extremely helpful without being intrusive . Beautiful beaches nearby , Padstow just a couple of miles away. The cottage was central to everywhere we wished to visit. I highly recommend Uphill cottage with its quirky homely feel. We hope to return soon, to make more lovely memories.

.a holiday cottage that's characterful and quirky. We loved it! And dog friendly too...something that's high on our list of priorities. We recommend Uphill Cottage very highly indeed. Uphill Cottage is in such a wonderful location...so peaceful, friendly locals, excellent host, lovely beaches within a short drive.The cottage had such a welcoming appeal and was full of character. Really cosy with or without the log stove, but we did have a log fire each evening! We didn't want for anything. The area has a lot to offer too with the harbour at Padstow and its ferry to Rock. If you like a nice flat walk then the Camel Trail from Padstow to Wadebridge is for you Thank you to Malcolm our host. Great for local beaches, amenities and Newquay/Padstow/A39/A30 (if you prefer a more authentic Cornish holiday - which we do!) The cottage is clean, spacious and welcoming. The conservatory is a great bonus (we watched the lightning one night for hours out there). Beds are clean and comfy with nice bedding. We travelled as two adults and 2 children with the dog, it was perfect for us. Malcolm the owner is very helpful about local activities if you need suggestions, he also lives nearby so on hand if needed but very chilled and non-intrusive. We loved it and hope to return!

“Lovely cottage and very nice and accommodating owners.”

The doors are very small so watch your head! Very quaint old cottage in a lovely village and nearby lots of things to do. Had everything you need already there which was great, such as washing up liquid and hand soap. Only issue was the hoover smelt of wet dog when we used it but that's obviously because it's pet friendly so next time we will book one that isn't. Shabby chic and with good countryside views from most windows. No signal but the wifi was fast so no complaints there. The welcome book was very handy as we needed to visit a GP during our stay.

PENROSE

St Merryn is a typical Cornish village, located within two miles of the coast and close to the picturesque harbour and fishing port of Padstow. Surrounded by some of Cornwall's best surfing beaches and golf courses, St Merryn is a holidaymakers dream, offering two pubs, three restaurants, a chinese takeaway, a chip shop, mini markets and a Post Office, yet St Merryn remains within easy reach of the area's visitor attractions.
